Vegetables:

Cabbage Family

1. Collards (brassica oleracea)
   1. large, spoon shaped, smooth leaves stem grows 36 inches; roots run around plant so mulching is necessary.

2. Kale
   1. Stem grows 24 inches; roots run around plant so mulching is necessary.
   2. surviving temp less than 10 degrees Fahrenheit
   3.  Allies: Chamomile and garlic improve growth and flavor. Companions: Beet, celery, chard, cucumber, lettuce, onion, potato, spinach.
3. Bok Choy
4. Mache and Claytonia 
5. Swiss Chard: Beta Vulgaris
   1. bright lights chard- beautiful multicolored stems
   2. Plant the seeds ½ to ¾ of inch deep in well-drained, rich, light soil.
   3. grows to be more than 12 inches tall.
   4. Plant chard seeds 2 to 3 weeks before the last spring frost date.
6. Peas:
   1. Shelling/ snap peas grow best in winter
   2. plant seed inch or 2 in dirt
   3. climbs up when growing
   4. Allies/ companions:
      1. Companions: Bean, carrot, corn, cucumber, radish, turnip. Allies: Chives deter aphids. Mint improves health and flavor. Enemies: Garlic and onion stunt the growth of peas.

Herbs/spices:

1. cilantro: coriandrum sativum
   1. can plant after last frost date in spring or in fall
   2. light well drained soil; 1-2 inches apart
   3. water regularly; 1 inch water per week but once established not as much.
2. Parsley: Petroselinum crispum 
   1. plant seeds 3 to 4 weeks before sprint frost
   2. plaint in moist, rich soil about 6 to 8 inches apart.
   3. water often

Flowers:

1. Nasturtium: (tropaeolum)
   
   1. edible flower, rapid growth, no fertilizers
   2. Seeds indoors 4 to 6 weeks before the last spring frost
   3. Half inch deep, 10 inches apart should appear in a week.
   4. trim and water regularly
   5. Very good companion plant for kale and collards.
2. Calendula, pot Marigold, calendula officinalis 
   1. can grow 8-18 inches in height
   2. bloom in 2 months
   3. used in herbal medicine, dye, and in some foods.
3. Pansies: viola x wittrockiana 
   1. plant in moist, humus rich, well drained soil.
   2. 9-12 inches spread, 6-9 inches tall
   3. water regularly, all-purpose fertilizer
   4. companions with cabbage and kale
