{"id":609,"date":"2015-05-23T03:38:36","date_gmt":"2015-05-23T03:38:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/flawedart.net\/greenstudio\/?p=609"},"modified":"2015-05-23T03:39:36","modified_gmt":"2015-05-23T03:39:36","slug":"farifax-3-construction-sites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/farifax-3-construction-sites\/","title":{"rendered":"Farifax: 3 Construction Sites"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Farifax: 3 Construction Sites<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em><strong>A project by Paul Beatty for AVT 385 EcoArt<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Documentation and Project Summary:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-610\" src=\"https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/1.png\" alt=\"1\" width=\"482\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/1.png 482w, https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/1-300x224.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In order to convey how previously tree-dominated areas and local farms have succumbed to large-scale construction projects, I have documented numerous construction sites that I have come across during my normal daily travel routine (Burke to Fairfax\/GMU).\u00a0 Over the course of one week, by visiting six different construction sites, I feel that I am able to not only provide my viewers with a method to visualize what current ecologically-oriented areas might look like in the near future (if we continue to carelessly satisfy society\u2019s need to expand and \u201cbeautify\u201d), but to encourage the preservation of the dwindling natural-areas we have left.<br \/>\nAs you can see in the figure below, over the span of just a few years, there have been three major construction projects along Burke Lake Road \u2013 not even a mile distance from each other.\u00a0 In particular, I have noticed that each of the previous properties where these projects took place was ecologically oriented.\u00a0 One of my growing concerns is that the mass of trees in the center of the picture will be the next to go\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-611\" src=\"https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/2.png\" alt=\"2\" width=\"483\" height=\"362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/2.png 483w, https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/2-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 483px) 100vw, 483px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The figure below represents the aftermath of a construction project involving a local farm at the corner of Burke Lake Road and Burke Centre Parkway. Once the owners of the farm died a few years ago, instead of keeping the farmland and crops, two large mansions were built \u2013 selling for multi-millions of dollars each.\u00a0 The only remnant of farm-life on the entire property revolves around a very small garden in the back of one of the houses.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-612\" src=\"https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/3.png\" alt=\"3\" width=\"485\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/3.png 485w, https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/3-300x223.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The figure below represents the aftermath of a construction project involving a previously tree-dominated area at the intersection of Burke Lake Road and Shiplett Boulevard.\u00a0 Nearly all of the trees were cut down so that construction companies could build a few family homes \u2013 selling for 1.2 million dollars each.\u00a0\u00a0 The only remnant of the tree-dominated area on the entire property is a small, man-made park in the center of the cul-de-sac as represented by a few trees surrounding a gazebo.\u00a0 Even so, the area is unable to host any wildlife that used to live there.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-613\" src=\"https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/4.png\" alt=\"4\" width=\"484\" height=\"364\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/4.png 484w, https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/4-300x226.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 484px) 100vw, 484px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The figure below represents the ongoing construction of a previously tree-dominated area at the intersection of Burke Lake Road and Burke Road.\u00a0 In order to build a total of five new mansions, the construction company plans to cut down a majority of the trees within the area. As represented by the construction on the houses below including the survey markers and cones in the current wilderness, there are plans for even greater expansion.\u00a0 The environmental effects of this construction are horrific.\u00a0 For instance, part of the hill above was cut out of the ground leading to mudslides into a nearby stream.\u00a0 Even the trees that were planted are not the same types of trees that were there originally.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-614\" src=\"https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/5.png\" alt=\"5\" width=\"484\" height=\"362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/5.png 484w, https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/5-300x224.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 484px) 100vw, 484px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As you can see in the figure below, over the span of just a few years, there have been at least two major construction projects within close proximity of one another at George Mason University.\u00a0 Although it may appear harmless (for the sake of modernization and \u201cbeautification\u201d), I have noticed that these acts have come at the cost of the already dwindling wildlife within the area.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/6.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-615\" src=\"https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/6.png\" alt=\"6\" width=\"484\" height=\"364\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/6.png 484w, https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/6-300x226.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 484px) 100vw, 484px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The figure below represents the finished product of the construction that occurred at George Mason University \u2013 specifically the construction of the science annex between Planetary Hall and Exploratory Hall.\u00a0 Although the university has done an adequate job attempting to replant the greenery that may have been destroyed in the immediate area, many people do not realize that all of the runoff from the project rolled directly into the stream behind the buildings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/7.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-616\" src=\"https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/7.png\" alt=\"7\" width=\"482\" height=\"362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/7.png 482w, https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/7-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The figure below represents the ongoing construction of the new Fenwick Library Extension at George Mason University.\u00a0 The construction currently going on in this area is an atrocity considering that the entire area was perhaps one of the only tree-dominated areas on the entire campus.\u00a0 In fact, for many years up to this construction, many classes within the sciences revolved around looking at the animal life within the wooded area.\u00a0 It is unlikely that the area will be able to support any wildlife in the future.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/9.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-618\" src=\"https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/9.png\" alt=\"9\" width=\"483\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/9.png 483w, https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/9-300x224.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 483px) 100vw, 483px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/10.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-619\" src=\"https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/10.png\" alt=\"10\" width=\"485\" height=\"363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/10.png 485w, https:\/\/sporastudios.org\/greenstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/10-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The following two figures below are a large-scale map of George Mason University\u2019s property and my documentation of the construction that has already occurred near the field house.
